Community Assistance Programme Supports Local Groups with Funding

The inaugural Mulhollands Funeral Directors Community Assistance Programme has provided vital funding to five outstanding local organisations dedicated to supporting the Carrickfergus and surrounding communities. The funds were awarded by Peter Mulholland to these organisations in recognition of their incredible efforts in addressing key community needs.

Community Hub – Carrickfergus Church of the Nazarene

The Community Hub was established by the Church of the Nazarene following the Covid-19 pandemic to help those affected by the rising cost of living. The Hub provides a warm, welcoming space with meals and access to essential food and hygiene products. Additionally, the initiative assists individuals with electricity and gas meter top-ups, ensuring that no one in the community is left without basic necessities.

During the festive season, the Hub extends its support by distributing local butcher vouchers and collaborating with the ‘Cash for Kids’ project to provide Christmas gifts for children and teenagers. Over the past three years, the Community Hub has consistently supported 10–12 families or individuals weekly, with plans to expand its outreach and community engagement.

CHILL (Carrickfergus Hub Improving Lives Locally)

CHILL is a grassroots organisation committed to enhancing mental health and well-being. The organisation offers one-on-one counselling, group activities, and social initiatives designed to alleviate loneliness and foster community connection. Monthly ‘CHILL ‘n’ Chat’ nights, walking groups, and open water swimming events provide safe and supportive spaces for individuals in need.

In response to increasing financial pressures, CHILL has partnered with DeLaceys Home Bakery to offer warm meals to those experiencing poverty or isolation. The initiative will discreetly identify beneficiaries through existing CHILL programs, ensuring dignity and comfort in receiving assistance. CHILL’s growing network of community collaborations strengthens the support system for those facing mental health challenges and financial hardships.

Charles Sheils Community

Operating since 1998, Charles Sheils Community has been a vital contributor to food security and sustainability efforts in Carrickfergus. Utilizing the grounds of Charles Sheils Houses, the group maintains three food-growing areas that produce vegetables, fruit, and herbs for residents and local volunteers.

The community’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond food production, as they engage in recycling, water conservation, biodiversity projects, and environmental education for school groups. With over 100 members, the Charles Sheils Community continues to promote well-being through shared activities, gardening, and conservation efforts.

Millbrook Church of the Nazarene – Easter Community Café

In response to food insecurity during school holidays, Millbrook Church of the Nazarene will be hosting an Easter Community Café from April 23–25, 2025, at Millbrook Community Centre. With 32.7% of local school pupils eligible for free school meals, many families struggle to afford meals during holiday periods.

The Easter Community Café will provide free, nutritious meals to children, families, and individuals—without means testing—while also creating a welcoming space for Easter-themed activities. The initiative will also serve as a resource hub, directing families to ongoing community support services, such as the MEA Affordable Food Club and local food banks.

Carrickfergus Babybank

Since its inception in 2019, Carrickfergus Babybank has been a crucial support system for families struggling with the costs of essential baby and children’s items. Operating out of The Open Door Centre, the Babybank provides nappies, toiletries, clothing, cots, prams, highchairs, and more to families in need across Carrickfergus, Greenisland, and Whitehead.

With referrals coming from local churches, Surestart, CAP, midwives, and social services, Carrickfergus Babybank assists around 200 children annually. Donations of pre-loved clothes are always welcome, while funding allows the purchase of new mattresses, underwear, and items that are not readily available in stock. Additionally, during Christmas, the Babybank ensures that children in need receives new pajamas, a book, and toys to bring joy during the holiday season.

Community Support in Action

The funding from Mulhollands Funeral Directors Community Assistance Programme will empower these organisations to continue and expand their invaluable work. Their collective efforts address food insecurity, mental health, financial hardships, and social isolation, ensuring that the Carrickfergus community remains resilient and connected.

Through collaboration and shared purpose, these organisations exemplify the power of community-driven initiatives in making a lasting impact. To learn more or to support these groups, follow their updates on social media or reach out to them directly.
